i joined this tribe simply because of the name, because i believe random acts of kindness should be a way of life... i believe the butterfly effect applies to them...)

it still remains a question how you can discuss 'ideas' of 'random acts of kindness', however, because once you discuss them they move into pre-meditative territory...

anyway, here's an idea, anyway (i am making this up as i go along)... it's for those of us inclined to choose the ladies' restroom...

leave some (wrapped and unused, if this actually has to be said) organic, all-cotton tampons in the next women's restroom you're in (this seems like it would be best served in, say, a rest area in like, nebraska or something, but frantic women exist everywhere)...

with a little info packet on all the dangers of bleached plastic tampons... ;)

'it still remains a question how you can discuss 'ideas' of 'random acts of kindness', however, because once you discuss them they move into pre-meditative territory... '

Huh... yeah I see your point -- different interpretations, both very important I believe. But something can be completely random for the receiver, yet pre-meditated for the perpetrator... (and perhaps executed at a completely random moment when the opportunity presents itself.)

The purpose of this thread is to plant seeds, to inspire. It would be completely random to find free tampons in a bathroom in the middle of South Dakota... "whoever would do such a thing?"

Random does not mean 'not premeditated'. Here's the dictionary def:

        ran·dom (răn'dəm)
        adj.
Having no specific pattern, purpose, or objective: random movements. See synonyms at chance.

So one can pre-think an action of kindness and do so and it will still be random as long as it's not repeated in a pattern.

One thing I do is that if I see a meter that is expired on an older car, I'll throw a dime or quarter into the slot since I imagine the person who might receive the parking ticket will be severely impacted by it. It's actually illegal to do this, but I'm willing to take the risk.

"it still remains a question how you can discuss 'ideas' of 'random acts of kindness', however, because once you discuss them they move into pre-meditative territory... "

however, they still are randomly kind to the recipient on the other end .. good enough for me =)

well these are just simple small ones ..

when driving through the toll bridges we make it our mission to always have a treat to give the toll-collector - fruit, wrapped goodies, something to brighten his/her day .. it must be a monotonous drag standing there collecting $$ all day .. & it's great to see a huge smile at the unexpected gift =)

also, we sometimes find someone behind us to pay the toll for .. =) some random stranger .. it's great to see the surprised looks on their faces and huge smiles as they later try & catch up & wave .. & surprisingly enough, i've had people pay my toll .. what comes around goes around, eh?

damn, kim - i was just about to post the 'toll booth' tip! that's always a good one.

for me, it seems the other 'random' acts tend to be spontaneous - just helping out when the opportunity presents....

'toll booth' can also be 'coffee' - every once in a while a guy in my old brooklyn neighborhood would buy the next person a surprise cup of coffee...

here's another one - find an old person, or an overworked single mom whose yard needs a little love. go do it.

I once was sitting at a fast food drive through... in my rear view mirror there was a guy and his kid they were singing, and laughing and exuded joy that leached out in bright colors... I smiled as I watched, it was such a wonderful and beautiful scene...

I paid for thier meal and drove off.

My brain has been over-worked today...creativity is low...I always like to help out elderly people in the parking lot of whatever store I'm at ~ at that time.
I know most like to be independent and do their own shopping but a little help once and again is always welcome and appreciated!!

I joined this tribe because I thought it would be great to learn random things that I could do to send positive love (what I call pixiedust) around the World.

I can't really think of one one now but I remember last Mother's Day when I bought a bouqet of roses for a lost one. I was sending the roses out to sea and then a short distance away I saw a pregnant girl. She couldn't have been more than twenty. She looked so sad, she was with her boyfriend and another guy. They were fishing and ignoring her, so I gave her the bouqet, and the look of suprise and gratitude on her face still warms me.

Gather a few sweet short stories for your bookshelf.

You won't have to look for them the next time you get the opportunity to read a bedtime story and tuck in a friend, whether sick, or insomniac or just weary from a long day.

And I agree. Premeditated is ok, so long as the gift is random. Thats the non-random~random alongside the random~random.

    Still beautifully random... Teehee

    Here's something small and easy.

Hold the door for people. Everyone. I'll stand and hold the door open for volumes of people. Smile. Make eye contact. Let others go ahead of you.

    Repeat daily.

I also look for people needing small help, like in the grocery store and I politely ask if they would like assistance. It's really easy.

"For the world is small and it is a pleasure to be kind to one another".

There is a guy at the college I went to who would regularly stand at one of the building's doors and hold it open during class breaks. He always had a big happy grin. I never did forget him :).

I joined because I embrace... to my core... the concept of random acts of kindness and senseless beauty...

And I wince at how such a pure and wonderful sentiment can be made banal and mediocre by a bumper sticker.

But, it is my hope that the true sentiment and feeling and power of random acts of kindness can be kept real and pure and alive.

Well as we all know in this materialistic and self-serving society, there are only a few folks out there with enough compassion to do something nice for their fellow man. Not matter how big or small the act is.
I joined to get to know such people and obtain some new ideas. Being a handyman I am always doing a few extra things for folks. It may be no big deal to many, but it feels good to take some extra time and handle some small little problem someone has been having and you having the knowledge to fix it, then not even charging for it as it's just your way of saying "thanks for being a nice client."

    Pay it forward:

In essence every good deed done without attachment is one step toward a hormoic life. I tend to appreciate the little moments which filter to me as a reflection of those little moments I have taken out for others. It's really a positive round-a-bout Yin & Yang to everyday life in the chaos of infinate possibility.

Oh, and I also joined because I like the people! (points at Seth among a few others)

I joined because the last few years of my life have been more on the selfish side and something is missing. I thought this tribe would help to inspire me to spread the love that is the essence of who I am. A way to get me back on track...Thank you for creating this space.
    Love and peace,
    Devon
