Seeking Samaritan

Benefactor 'changed my life'

By SARAH KENNEDY, CALGARY SUN

Nicole Borriello is looking for the mystery man who rescued her after her tire was repeatedly slashed and then later returned to the scene to replace it.

For the past week Borriello, 34, has been thinking constantly about the Good Samaritan known only as "Doug" to thank him for helping her "more than he probably knows."

Borriello, a fitness trainer, said a personal crisis left her in tears as she was driving to work just before 4 p.m. on Aug. 8.

Her car started thumping as she travelled along Bow Bottom Tr. "I parked at the side of the road and got out and my back tire had about 30 slashes in it and I thought, 'What's next?" she said.

Not knowing when or where her tire was slashed, Borriello made calls to her mother and friends, but they couldn't help.

While worrying how she would get to work, a man pulled over and asked if she needed help.

"I thought to myself, 'In this day and age, do I take the help? Do I go with him?'" she said.

Borriello climbed into the man's car and said her father would fix the tire later.

Doug drove her to work, shook her hand, and wished her luck.

A few hours later, Borriello's father picked up her keys to go and fix her tire. "That was the night we had the horrible hail storm," she said.

"He showed back up shortly after with a blank look on his face and said my tires were perfect."

Borriello's father handed her a soggy note found on her windshield, that said, "May God be a blessing to you. With kind regards, Doug T."

Borriello said she wants to find Doug and thank him.

"I want him to know he didn't just change my tire but he changed my life -- he was like an angel who came to me and said everything is going to be alright," she said.

"I want people to know there are good people in this world."

As you might know, the head of a company survived 9/11 because his son started kindergarten that morning. Another fellow was alive because it was his turn to bring donuts. One woman was late because her alarm clock didn't go off in time. One was late because of being stuck on the NJ Turnpike because of an auto accident.

One of them missed his bus.

One spilled food on her clothes and had to take time to change.

One's car wouldn't start.

One went back to answer the telephone .

One had a child that dawdled and didn't get ready as soon as he should have.

One couldn't get a taxi.

The one that struck me was the man who put on a new pair of shoes that morning, took the various means to get to work but before he got there, he developed a blister on his foot. He stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid. That is why he is alive today.

Now when I am stuck in traffic, miss an elevator, turn back to answer a ringing telephone... all the little things that annoy me ... I think to myself, this is exactly where God wants me to be at this very moment.

Next time your morning seems to be going wrong, the children are slow getting dressed, you can't seem to find the car keys, you hit every traffic light, don't get mad or frustrated; God is at work watching over you.

May God continue to bless you with all those annoying little things and may you remember their possible purpose.

During the recent power outage here in Humboldt County I ventured out into the wind-blown world to find food and ice for my 'fridge...Safeway was out and had been for some time and most all other grocery stores and gas stations were closed. However, I did stumble upon one 76 Station with and attendant standing outside a dark building and next to an ice box.

Taking a simple chance that the ice box may not be empty of its contents...I pulled over and asked "Got ice?" then added "For sale?" He said that I may take as much ice as I needed, just come back when the power returns and pay for it then. I thanked the man very much and took only what I needed, thinking that someone else may take more than they need due to fear. I carted the cold bags home and kept the old 'fridge chilled for the next two days saving a lot of foods.

As promised, I returned to the station after the power was returned (thanks to the many workers that made it possible), to pay my debt.

The man was not there, another station worker stood behind the counter. After explaining what I wished to pay for the woman's eyes seemed to sparkle. She told me that there were 96 bags of ice taken that day...and almost all of it had been made good on. They could have lost $100 that day, maybe due to the kindness of the man that was there or it may have melted in the box and they were a little surprised that they had recovered so much.

Don't forget to repay your debts of kindness...whether or not it's in a magical or monetary way...

I am sure that the next time this gas station has the chance to help out its fellow human bean...it will.

In my neighborhood there are seven or eight pairs of shoes hanging in the low heavens. If this asthetic pleases you as it pleases me, I encourage a mass shoe upheaval. Tie your old shoes together by the laces and give em a whirl.

Don't throw those loved to death old companions into the trash... give them a proper sky burial :) Distribute evenly through the town, in a specific neighborhood, or on one special tree where they may congregate. When I was moving out of town I wondered what I could do with it. It was too precious to throw away, and too fragile to attempt to pack into a box. So I climbed a tree that grew over a high-traffic walk way and hung it there. Almost two years later it still hangs there, only slightly worn from two years worth of rain. I wonder how many people have seen it there and paused to think.

When I hung it I was already inspired... now that I have seen it still there, I am going to make more mobiles, and hang them in different trees around town, directly over walk ways, to be seen and provoke thought and perhaps inspiration. A gift to the tree and a gift to humanity. Have fun.

Here is the information on the flyer:
URGENT! SAVE STAN 'TOOKIE' WILLIAMS! STOP THE EXECUTION
From Death Row at San Quentin State Prison, "Tookie" has written 9 anti-gang books and has saved the lives of over 150,000 youth who were either preparing to join a gang or got out of a gang, based on the testimonials of tens of thousands of e-mails sent to him by youth all over the world.
He has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five times and has been
nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature four times.
He received a 2005 Presidential Call to Service Award from President Bush for his efforts to save youth.
Stan 'Tookie' Williams is our Death Row as a result of a racist trial and was
convicted by an all-white jury.
Witnesses were interrogated by police and those facing long sentences in prison had their sentences reduced if they testified.
He is scheduled for execution by the State of California on December 13, 2005.
Help Stop the Execution of Stanley Williams and learn how you can help save his life in these final hours.

There will be petitions at the event or you can also visit:
www.savetookie.org/
to sign an online petition as well as receive more in depth information about Tookie Williams.

AND/OR call Arnold at 916-445-2841 and say something along the lines of, "Please grant clemency to death row inmate Stanley Tookie Williams. He is helping to save troubled youth across the world. I know that you, Governor Schwarzenegger, are also an advocate for helping troubled youth through your own programs. Please do not let a good man die."

this came to me to day and got me gigglin' so hard..... reminded me to be more grateful

----------

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious
diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with
walking twenty-five miles to school every morning ... uphill BOTH ways...
through year 'round blizzards. Carrying their younger siblings on their
backs ... to their one-room schoolhouse, where they maintained a
Straight-A average, despite their full- time, after-school job at the
local textile mill.... where they worked for 35 cents an hour just to help
keep their family from starving to death!

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in
hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I
had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that...

I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and
notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my
childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kids
today you don't know how good you've got it! I mean, when I was a kid we
didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to knowsomething, we had to go to
the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!

There was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter ...with a
pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the
mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!

There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to
hitchhike to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself! Or you had to
wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually talk
over the beginning and @#*% it all up!

We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and
somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it! And we didn't have
fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it
was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, your drug
dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it
up and take your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution
3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like "Space Invaders" and
"Asteroids" and the graphics sucked ass! Your guy was a little square! You
actually had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or
screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win. The game
just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died!
... Just like LIFE!

When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating!
All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy or some old broad with a
hat sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were just screwed!

Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15
channels and there was no onscreen menu and no remote control! You had to
use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were
screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and
walk over to the TV to change the channel and there was no Cartoon Network
either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what
I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little
bastards!

And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up. we had to
use the stove or go build a frigging fire ... imagine that! If we wanted
popcorn, we had to use that stupid JiffyPop thing and shake it over the
stove forever like an idiot.

That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too
easy. You're spoiled.

You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980!

I asked for a box and poured the soup into it, walked outside and gave it to a homeless man. I don't understand sometimes the wastefullness of people. Just to remind people and enourage you to not be too prideful to pack up someone elses food and take it with you. People that eat out of garbage cans don't care too much if someone's germs are on their food.

Now I realize candy is not the most ideal thing to be giving children, especially where oral hygiene is not the most developed, but man do they smile! One little piece of candy and they light up like God just patted them on the head... (which the analogy is not far from the truth).

Also, a pair of cheap flip-flops is less than a dollar. So I filled my bag up with five small pairs and made five children's day an amazing one. Next time I come back to town I am going to buy a few more (larger ones for the adolescents).

As a gringo here, it takes so little to give so much... I just want to remind you all of the abundance we live in, even when at times it seems like we may be lacking... it has probably been awhile for most of us since we went without shoes, or slept on the sidewalk. This isn't a call to instill guilt, but gratitude, and to remind everyone of the deep joy felt by sharing with others when we have an opportunity to do so.

However, I'd like to go a little out of my way to do special little things that will help and make his second burn even more amazing than the first. I don't have a lot of resources, mind, since money's hard to come by.

Johnny Appleseed is my personal hero... and knowing that he planted all those apples so everyone could enjoy more Applejack, not just eat more fruit, makes him all the more my inspiration.

When you eat fruit (non-GMO please), take the seeds, (sprout them if you have the time and motivation) and toss them onto some public land, the border of someone's property, or the side of the road (ideally ten to fifteen feet back). Does anyone else see a world lined with fruit trees for everyone to pick and enjoy? Even if it won't fruit in your climate, might as well give the species a fighting chance to adapt right?

Same thing with cuttings that root easily or roots themselves. Broccoli for example will often grow if you just stick the stalk into the ground, and there isn't anything easier in this respect than a potato.

For the really inspired... peat pots. Need I say more?

While I was on a farm in Hawaii, there were dozens of volunteer tobacco plants sprouting up (at one point in history tobacco was grown in that spot commercially). I pulled up about twenty of them, put as many as I could in peat pots I had, and planted them all around the area. Each little plant was given specific instructions to flower and go to seed. On the tobacco topic, I also found a plant that had gone to seed growing out of the side of a cliff over the ocean. Tobacco seeds are tiny and abundant. I harvested most of the seed pods (as it was out of the side of a cliff and over the ocean) and have planted them all along the Na Pali coast (on a different Hawaiian island), given them away to lots of people, and have successfully smuggled (hehehehe... although customs didn't care) a whole grip of them into Peru where they now await my help in distribution.

WARNING: Be mindful of delicate ecosystems and invasive species. Before planting just anything anywhere it is important to understand a little bit of how it will all turn out. One of the ideas here besides promoting abundance is increasing biodiversity. Do some research, use common sense, observe and be patient, ask the plants, etc... There are many things I'd love to see growing everywhere, but they'll just take everything over in a new ecosystem and one wouldn't see much else there in the future.

HAVE FUN!!! Promote abundance!!! Paint the world with flowers and fruits and sacred plants...

A thought crossed my mind the other day that simply enabling others to feel good about themselves, would solve a lot of problems. I Work as an RN in a nursing home and I have seen a shift in the way residents and staff get on. There has been a bit of a conscious effort to provide non-patronizing honest encouragements and feed back. I have been telling my aids to “look the resident in the eye when you speak. It encourages a strong interaction. And to say things like I don’t mind helping. But they have to mean it. That is the catch. It world sound a bit naive to think that a person can change the world by simply encouraging self worth, but you must mean what you say for it to work. False compliments don’t work. I make a point to give praise of my aids in public. I reassure folks that we do care and I know I can took them in the eye when I say it.. I hope to share this place of personal integrity, and reinforce with the notion that, choosing to greet the world from a place of trust rather than fear is no small task. But, well worth the effort!!!
